14th Century Great Helm Black Finish – 18 Gauge Steel
The large Great Helm of the high middle ages was a highly protective and encompassing helmet that was worn by Knights and heavily-armored men-at-arms and it gives superb protection of the head for close-in, chaotic and brutal melee combat where heavy blows from all manner of weapons could be expected. These helmets were made to be quite large on the inside to allow for substantial padding to be worn beneath it – in many cases it was even worn over an inner helmet which fitted more closely to the head for a dual-layered steel protection supplemented by padding.
This replica is constructed from durable 18 gauge steel with riveted and welded construction and supplemented by an integrated aventail of butted mail rings of blackened steel and dagged brass ring edging. The rings of the aventail are stitched onto a band of durable leather which is riveted into the bottom of the helmet to give the aventail a secure attachment. The helmet is embellished with carefully applied gold paint to reproduce the gilt look that some of these fine-quality helms had.
The interior of the helmet is unlined. A separate padded cotton arming cap is included.
